For many Kanaka poi is the first solid food we get to eat. We are raised on it. Not only is it hypoallergenic, a good source of calcium and iron. But culturally it is a part of how we maintain the familial connection between Kanaka and the 'Aina.
Haloa is our ancestor and as we care for him (Kalo) it matures then we are able to harvest the Kalo and replant it. We consume the corm therefore Haloa in turn nourishes us.
